State & Story

Asmita Theatre Group, a New Delhi–based theatre group founded on 23 February 1993, has been a vital force in the Indian theatre industry for over 33 years.

Born out of the belief that theatre is not merely a site of aesthetic innovation but a living site of cultural practice, Asmita has been consistently positioning its performances as an act of dialogue. Its stepping stones were founded with the belief in humanising socio-political events of the past, engaging with critical discourse and bringing its art to the people via numerous mediums.

For us, theatre is not something that happens to the audience but one that happens with them. Over three decades, we have forged a powerful presence both on the proscenium stage and in the streets. By moving fluidly among the two, the group transforms its performances into participation by the audience, creating thinking and engaging audiences. For us, each production is crafted with care, aesthetic innovation and collective introspection.

Theatre continues to remain an ongoing conversation with its time — responsible, courageous and equally empathetic. It remains a space where art and performance meet public life. As we continue to stage new and historical stories, we seek to leave a lasting imprint on the hearts of the audiences beyond the final curtain.
